Shield Tunneling Machine Air Conditioning Unit

Tunnel Boring Machine Air Conditioning Unit

Our company has developed an air-conditioning system that combines external-loop cooling‑water refrigeration with forced‑draft cooling air to lower temperatures at the tunnel face. Building on conventional external-loop cooling and tunnel ventilation, this system installs air-conditioning units directly on the tunnel boring machine. The tunnel ventilation airflow is passed through an air cooler, and the cooled air is delivered via the secondary ventilation system to the working face—specifically, the segment‑assembly area. The outlet temperature of the secondary fan can reach 20°C, which is 10–12°C lower than ambient conditions, effectively reducing temperatures in the work zone and improving the construction environment.

Equipment Introduction

Our company has developed an air-conditioning system that combines external-loop cooling‑water refrigeration with forced‑air cooling to lower the temperature at tunnel‑section working faces. Building on conventional external‑loop cooling and tunnel ventilation, the system is installed directly on the tunnel boring machine. It cools the tunnel ventilation airflow in an air cooler and then delivers the cooled air through the secondary ventilation system to the construction work area—specifically, the segment‑assembly zone. The outlet temperature of the secondary fan can reach 20°C, which is 10–12°C lower than ambient conditions, effectively reducing temperatures in the work zone and improving the construction environment.

The chiller unit and insulated water tank are mounted on the first level of the carriage; their dimensions can be freely customized to fit the existing space of the tunnel boring machine, and the relative positions of the chiller, pumps, and water tank can be flexibly adjusted. The air cooler is installed on the second level of the carriage, connected in series with the ductwork; its size can match that of the carriage’s existing ducts, meaning that wherever a duct can be installed, the air cooler can also be accommodated, completely unaffected by the limited space on the second level.

Tranp Tunnel’s air-conditioning system is in close collaboration with China Railway Construction, providing strong support for Guangdong’s metro network.

When tunnels are being excavated for railways, highways, and subways in southern China, temperatures inside tunnel portals can sometimes reach 42°C. In response to market demand, our company has developed a tunnel air-conditioning system designed for use on tunnel boring machines, which effectively mitigates high ambient temperatures within the tunnel. This system has already been successfully deployed in Guangdong’s subway projects, where it helps maintain tunnel temperatures below 30°C even during the hottest summer conditions.

Cooling Water Cooling System for the Mixing Plant

During the hot season, the temperature inside cement silos at mixing plants can reach 50–60°C, necessitating cooling measures. Currently, the most common approach is to wrap the silos with shade cloths to protect them from direct sunlight. However, due to the tall design of the silos, installing these cloths is challenging, and their fixation is often inadequate, resulting in limited shading effectiveness. Moreover, prolonged exposure to sunlight can degrade the shade cloths, diminishing their protective function and requiring frequent replacement. Additionally, when shading is not needed, the cloths must be removed, which is time‑consuming and labor‑intensive.

China Railway Construction’s tunnel boring machines, in conjunction with Terip’s tunnel air-conditioning units, deliver highly efficient operations.

For many years, China Railway Construction Corporation has maintained a long-term partnership with our company, making significant contributions to tunnel excavation by providing ventilation and cooling solutions that effectively address the challenges of tunnel‑face ventilation and temperature control. Our company has developed a tunnel air-conditioning system that combines external-loop cooling water from the tunnel boring machine with forced‑draft cooled air to lower temperatures at the tunnel face. Building on conventional external-loop cooling and tunnel ventilation, this system installs an air-conditioning unit directly on the TBM. The tunnel ventilation airflow is passed through an air cooler, and the cooled air is delivered via the secondary ventilation system to the working face—specifically, the segment‑assembly area. The outlet temperature of the secondary fan can reach as low as 20°C, which is 10–12°C below ambient conditions, thereby providing effective cooling and improving the working environment.
