what is the split chiller?

A split-system chiller is a central air conditioning system that separates the main refrigeration cycle components into two independent units. As the name suggests, it consists of separate units, typically divided into an outdoor unit and an indoor unit.

These two parts are connected by refrigerant copper pipes (including gas and liquid lines) and control wiring, forming a complete vapor compression refrigeration cycle.

Outdoor unit

Contains the compressor, condenser, and condenser fan. This part is the heat dissipation and power core of the unit, responsible for compressing the refrigerant and dissipating heat through condensation.

Indoor unit

Contains the evaporator and refrigerant water circulation pump. This part is the cooling core, responsible for absorbing heat from the chilled water to lower its temperature.

Working Principle

The refrigeration cycle process is as follows:

Compression:

Low-temperature, low-pressure refrigerant gas is compressed into high-temperature, high-pressure gas in the compressor of the outdoor unit.

Condensation:

The high-temperature, high-pressure gas enters the condenser of the outdoor unit, and under the forced cooling of the condenser fan, it condenses into a medium-temperature, high-pressure liquid.

Throttling:

The liquid refrigerant is throttled through an expansion valve (usually located in the indoor unit or connecting pipe), becoming a low-temperature, low-pressure gas-liquid mixture.

Evaporation:

The low-temperature, low-pressure refrigerant enters the evaporator of the indoor unit, absorbs the heat from the chilled water flowing through the evaporator tubes, and completely evaporates into a gas, simultaneously lowering the temperature of the chilled water (for example, from 12℃ to 7℃).

Circulation:

The evaporated low-temperature, low-pressure refrigerant gas is again drawn into the compressor, starting the next cycle.

Chilled Water Delivery:

The cooled chilled water is delivered by the water pump (or external water pump) of the indoor unit to the fan coil units, air handling units, and other equipment at the building's end, providing cooling to the rooms.

Application Scenarios

Split-system chillers are primarily suitable for small and medium-sized buildings where it is impossible or inconvenient to set up a dedicated equipment room and where there are no conditions for installing a cooling tower, or for locations with strict indoor noise requirements.

Commercial Renovation and Expansion Projects:

Existing Building Energy-Saving Renovation: Existing buildings may not have a dedicated air conditioning equipment room, or the existing space may be insufficient; split-system units are an ideal choice.

Shops, Restaurants, Small Shopping Malls: Compact spaces requiring an independent cooling source; outdoor units can be wall-mounted or placed on the roof.

Data Centers/Communication Base Stations (Small): High reliability requirements, requiring year-round cooling, and usually without a dedicated cooling tower.

Public and Institutional Buildings:

Schools, Hospitals, Laboratories: High requirements for indoor quietness; noise sources can be isolated outdoors. Often used in certain independent areas of hospitals (such as MRI rooms).

Bank Branches, Telecommunication Offices, Government Service Halls: Open spaces, often located inside buildings, making it impossible to install integrated units.

Hotels: As an independent air conditioning system for large spaces such as banquet halls and restaurants, or as a modular air conditioning system for guest room areas.

Industrial and Special Applications:

Process Cooling: Providing process chilled water for injection molding machines, laser equipment, welding machines, etc.; outdoor units can be flexibly arranged outside the workshop.

Regional Cooling: In a large building complex, independent split-system units can be configured for different buildings or areas to achieve separate billing and independent control.
