U-tube bundle heat exchanger

U-tube heat exchangers are a type of shell-and-tube heat exchanger and belong to the category of petrochemical equipment.

| Product Details

The U-tube heat exchanger is a type of shell-and-tube heat exchanger, classified as petrochemical equipment. It consists of key components such as the tube box, shell, and tube bundle, and derives its name from the U-shaped configuration of its heat exchange tubes. The U-tube heat exchanger features a single tube sheet, with both ends of the tubes securely fastened to the same tube sheet.

Applicable operating conditions

U-tube heat exchangers are well suited for applications where there is a significant temperature difference between the tube side and the shell side, and where the shell-side fluid is prone to fouling and requires periodic cleaning, while the tube-side fluid remains clean and resistant to fouling. They are also ideally suited for high‑temperature, high‑pressure service involving highly corrosive fluids.

Key Features

●In a U-tube bundle heat exchanger, each heat exchange tube is bent into a U-shape, with both ends securely fixed to the upper and lower sections of the same tube sheet. A baffle within the tube box divides the unit into inlet and outlet chambers.

●U-tube bundle heat exchangers completely eliminate thermal stresses and have a simpler structure than floating-head types, but the tube side is difficult to clean.

●U-tube bundle heat exchangers have a relatively sparse tube arrangement, resulting in low tube‑sheet utilization and a tendency for shell‑side fluid to short‑circuit, which adversely affects heat transfer.

●In a U-tube bundle heat exchanger, when a tube leaks or is damaged, only the U‑shaped tubes on the outer periphery are easy to replace; the inner‑layer heat exchange tubes cannot be replaced and must be plugged. Moreover, the failure of a single U‑tube is equivalent to the failure of two tubes, resulting in a relatively high scrap rate.
